چکیده
Debonding of films attached to substrates as well as fibers embedded in matrices typically involves initiation, steady-state propagation and a final transient as the debond converges on an edge or another debond. The emphasis in this paper is on the mechanics of the transient. Under most circumstances, a converging debond crack is characterized by an energy release rate that approaches zero, causing the crack to arrest without attaining full debonding. The relevance of this phenomenon will be discussed with reference to the measurement of toughness for thin film interfaces and the overall stress-strain behavior of ceramic matrix composites. ~8 1997 Acto Metallurgica Inc.

The photothermal deflection technique is used to measure the thermal diffusivity of a metal+eramic composite. The present, as well as other data on composites are analyzed to estimate a value for the Kapitza radius, rk, which represents the effectivevalue of the thermal boundary resistance of heterointerfaces. Remarkably, the data from different metal+eramic composite materials lead to a simila...

ÐThe grain boundary segregation of Bi in dilute polycrystalline Cu±Bi alloys was systematically studied as a function of temperature and composition. The temperature dependencies of the Gibbsian excess of Bi at the grain boundaries exhibited discontinuous changes at the temperatures close to, but dierent from the bulk solidus temperatures. The observed segregational phase transition was interp...

ÐThe durability of residually compressed coatings, particularly thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), is governed by events occurring at the interface with the substrate. In general, failure involves the sequential nucleation growth and coalescence of separations in the presence of imperfections and defects. The growth and coalescence phases are analyzed. Remnant ligaments are expected from the mech...

The morphology and microstructure of metallic thin films synthesized by physical vapor deposition are known to be sensitive functions of the incident flux, its angular distribution and kinetic energy as well as the substrate temperature. Using an embedded atom method to represent the interatomic interactions, two-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations have been conducted to identify the rol...
